CHAPTER 17

After dinner, Delanie cleaned Zane’s kitchen with Marie’s help and was glad to get to know about Zane’s family. She’d been surprised that he had one. He didn’t have any family pictures around the house. He didn’t talk about himself⸺he didn’t talk period.

When he first moved in, he wasn’t interested in knowing anyone⸺especially Delanie.

While Delanie and Marie chatted in the kitchen, Zane, Chase and the boys played a game in the living room.

For a moment, Delanie felt a jolt of emptiness. She’d always focused on her career. It had seemed safer than having a relationship. She’d seen how miserable her parents were. Even after the divorce, her father was still miserable and rarely kept in touch.

When he was overseas, he started to contact Delanie, making her regret all the years he’d been estranged. Her throat closed. If only he’d trusted her enough to stay in touch. After her father was deployed, Delanie wondered if he felt better about reaching out to her because he’d accepted salvation through Christ.

He’d never said. She only assumed he’d accepted Jesus as his Savior because of her father’s worn Bible the military had returned to her along with his other effects.

Zane talked Chase and his family into canceling their reservation in Fort Collins and staying the night at his house. The boys were thrilled. Marie looked relieved, too. She had to be exhausted from traveling with two energetic boys.

Delanie wished them a good night and safe travels before returning to her house. When she stepped into her house and set Coco on the floor, the Chihuahua jumped and pranced.

“You poor thing.” Delanie gave Coco a sympathetic look. “Didn’t you have fun playing with the boys? You seemed to.”

Scooping the dog into her arms, she was still filled with the euphoria of having spent an evening with Zane and his family. His blue eyes shone when the boys crawled into his lap and called him Grandpa. Warmth filled Delanie. Zane was meant to be with his family. Maybe he understood that now.

A jolt of realization pierced Delanie. What if he moved away to be closer to his family?

She swallowed the lump in her throat. He had to be where God meant for him to be. If he left Crystal Creek, she had to trust God in that.

After changing into a loose top and shorts, Delanie picked up Coco and carried her into her office. The dog curled into her lap and fell asleep while Delanie scanned emails she hadn’t checked for several hours.

When she saw the notice from Mad Dog, her heart kicked up a notch. Had he found information about Aysim? Mad Dog was a man of few words. He wouldn’t contact her unless he had news. She clicked the link that connected to the chatroom. Mad Dog’s avatar was illuminated. He was online.

A buddy’s found Aysim. He can evacuate him to the US, but Aysim won’t leave without his family who are in hiding in another part of the country.

What does he need to get Aysim and his family out of Baktare? Does he need money? I have money.
